Gear for the Mountains Since 1997

Reopening with new owners on June 2, 2010.

Whenever we needed gear for our next adventure – or just wanted a cosy new jacket – we headed to The Guide’s Hut, our friend’s store on Second Avenue here in Fernie.

Heinz Weixelbaum and Judy McMahon founded The Guide's Hut to be a welcoming place to come in from the winter cold or summer heat. Like a mountain hut anywhere, it is a place to take a break and talk to fellow adventurers before continuing on your way.

Over the years, we outfitted ourselves there for camping trips, backcountry tours, and spins on local mountain biking trails. Finally, we got serious about our shopping and bought the whole store.

Who are we? Well, I am the quiet, behind-the-scenes partner. My love of the Elk Valley in all seasons started during my 5 year stint with Island Lake, and continues to grow the more I explore.

We are excited to make a good thing even better," says Mark. "A community-based sports store full of mountain bikes, skis, camping and climbing gear plus top name clothing brands to make your life in the mountains amazing!"

Service is a big part of The Guide’s Hut experience. We have two of the best bike and certified ski techs in the East Kootenays, Alain Vidal and homegrown shredder Matty Baron. They know their stuff and are your "go-to-guys" for local trail knowledge, tuning and repair work.

Emilie Dabros and Shantelle Demore handle the front country. They hold the key to your next purchase – the key of knowledge, that is. Think of them as a hotline to all your favourite brands.

Next time you are in downtown Fernie, stop by and say hello. See what is new, and tell us about your latest adventure. After all, as Mark says, "We are in this together. We love the mountains and we want to back you for every foot stomp, pedal push and powder turn!"
